IS IT IF OR WHEN WILL WILLIE HERENTON BE INDICTED?

My cell has rung all day asking me whether or not I had any info on Mayor Willie Herenton being indicted. My first call came this morning as I eat breakfast downtown on Beale stating that someone had called in on a local radio station stating that Herenton had been indicted on 13 counts. I immediately got on the phone but could not concerned the statement as fact, but throughout the day I spoke with several sources in law enforcement that stated that Herenton had been taken away in handcuffs earlier on Thursday.
Sources within city hall swear that FBI agents were in the mayor's office early this morning, they also state that agents went to Herenton's South Memphis home also this morning. The word is not if Herenton is going to be indicted but when, and that some close to Herenton are worried if some of his dirt may get on them. I can believe this knowing that someone very close to the mayor wanted to talk to me in April,in fact even came to my birthday party to let me know that there was something that I needed to know. But we were never able to hook up.
Along with the mayor's involvement with E.W. Moon I was told today that the Feds may also be looking at whether the old Greyhound Bus terminal was sold secretly to Herenton Investments who in turn sold it to E.W. Moon who in turn sold it to MATA to house the trolley cars.
While everything that has been stated today is rumor I do know from a very reliable source that late this evening (Thursday) between 7:30 and 8:00 Herenton was seen leaving the office of attorney Ruby Wharton.
WHATS YOUR VIEW ON TODAY'S RUMORS?

It seem as thought when ever blacks
get in a position of authority. The only way to get them out is by indictment.

He should have sat his azz down two elections ago.

thad what kind of attorney is ruby wharton ? if shes a criminal defense lawyer then there's your answer.the feds probaly met with him to iron out the details as to when he would be taken into custody.we all know a news conference will be held when and if this occurs.also they might we waiting on e.w moon to arrive in memphis to surrender.and book them together

Sources also informed me Herenton's good friend Clifton Dates and his daughter were served today. Will they ever learn spending CDA's money like it is their own is a big No No.

I hope if this is true that willie herenton indeed gets prosecuted to the full extent of the law and hopefully the feds won't get made to look the fool like in the edmund ford case. God don't like ugly and too many black elected officials have made a mockery of the civil rights movement. It seems as though the movie "The man without a punk bone in his body" is being recalled after all.

These are all false rumors. Nothing is going on with Herenton.

Herenton...he's been ridin dirty. Just a matter of time before he and John Ford are playing cards together in a jail cell.

Thad, there was a fundraiser for John Fowkles at the Wharton Law firm. that is why he was seen there probably.

Anonymous said...

I don't think anyone...black or white...would be very surprised if this came to pass.

Even the most diehard Herenton supporters have to admit that he was never the superstar they hoped for, and that what happened to this city during his administration will take years (maybe decades) to recover from. And it will be a painful recovery.

Hopefully voters now realize the wisdom of looking past color and into the experience and integrity of the candidate.

When Herenton was first elected, the voters seemed to forget that he was ejected from his job at the Memphis City Schools. If the voters had taken this to heart then, they would have asked themselves, "Why would we elect a man who was removed from a lesser job and give him a much bigger, more important job?"

Let's not make this mistake again.

As for Herenton, his ego and his "I'm accountable to nobody" attitude won't get him any sympathy if and when the chips fall.

Next to his picture in the history books will most likely be the word, "Memphis," and a picture of a train wreck.

What a truly sad condition he has left this city and its residents in.

i am, and have been a huge fan of WWH. as a life-long memphian i remember what Memphis was like before he had a chance to change some things. i can only imagine what a poor state this city would be in if he had not made investment into downtown a priority. suburban sprawl has crippled most inner cities of this country and Memphis WAS poised to be one of the best examples because of the white flight that initially knee capped this city and retarded its growth from becoming the southern capital it once was into a wasteland of decay. IT IS THE MONEY STUPID. he understood that. bring the money "base" back and growth will take care of itself. can you imagine the massive amounts of wealth that are located downtown-midtown-east memphis as it is now being there had the suburban communities continued its exodus? NO. strong arm/will tactics - maybe. no tact - ok. everything i hate about bushes tactics i admire in herenton due to the desire to good as apposed to the desire to fuck-over by bush. this city needed him and he stood up in the face of bullshit/racism and anti-progresive attitudes. his battle against the toon towns solidified his perseverence oriented methods and willingness to go against the grain for what is right. i have no idea what is going on right now but i do hope he was smarter than the lessor politicians that have fallen because of greed. if he is guilty of anything so be it. if not then this latest attack is either a gonzales/rove originated crusade against democracy or herenton himself slandering local radio stations. i could almost forgive him for the later due to the sorry state of his reception by my young white brothers at events such as memphis in may or the other primarily white music event he was booed at. i am white and 31 years old. i grew up under him as a mcs student. i witnessed him become mayor as a high school student and let me tell you...never have i seen my black brothers and sisters prouder. that is the same pride he has brought back to memphis for everyone, white and black. go downtown, or to midtown or to east memphis if you do not believe me. "what about the poor communities?" therin lies the best part. midtown was poor, downtown was vacant. east memphis would be another poor too had herenton not stopped the exodus. he is not god. he understood that memphis needed money to restore itself and letting all the money go south, east and north was not the answer. every big city has crime, memphis is no diffrent. the scores of high violence come from tennessee's scoring methods. we are not any worse any any area of crime per adjusted gross income. yes its the money. he is trying to bring the jobs and tax base back, i dont blame him most of the time for being a dick, he keeps being attacked by people who just dont like a black man with balls running things. i just hope he dosent prove them right.

I hope Ruby Wharton does not take a case representing Mayor Herenton. That is just a little too much. Mayor Wharton's wife may need to think about all of the ramifications of that choice. In this case, she should remember that while we respect her right to practice law, this is a special case and with her husband as the Mayor of Shelby County, there should not be any hint of impropriety and the best way to do that is to stay out of it.

A possible indictment would explain Willie's behavior at that press conference a few weeks back.

It also explains why his head is so far up the new superintendent's behind. Willie needs to get back into the black community's good graces following his petty behavior in denigrating Cash and the other finalists with the "third rate" comment.

I just want to know if it's true and when is it going down?

Here is the deal, yes white politicians have been doing "it" all the time. We all know what "it" is. But the difference in white politicians and the black ones that do "it" to, is that even though they take kick backs, sell votes, money launder, etc. THEY TAKE CARE OF THEIR COMMUNITIES AND CONSTITUENCIES! But what do black politicians do? They take care of themselves forgetting the interest of the people that put them in the that position. Can you say SELL OUT!

To Brandon Vickery: It is good that you are such a grand supporter of the Mayor. Do you also support his cronyism? You act like his battle with the "toon towns" was nothing more than positioning to consolidate. I think most people believe that consolidation is inevitable, but WWH is NOT the man to make it happen. With consolidation of the City and County comes the CONSOLIDATED BUDGETS of both. You also say that "white flight" crippled the city. That is a rather backwards way of saying "the black community can't hold up the city on their own merits." WWH himself said "good riddance, we don't need you." Why would caucasians WANT to stay in a city where the very leadership publicly entertains notions of paranoia, at their expense? Can you blame them for wanting to get out? We (personallly) "fled" because of the poor quality of the MCS schools - now THERE'S a whole other can o' worms. But, if WWH has his way, he can just appoint the school board, like he has every other position under his tenure. THE reason why the city has no money to give to the MCS - because it has all been gobbled up by the incredible increases in "Administrative costs." Here's a hint: "Administrative costs" = CREATED jobs and 30% RAISES for WWH's cronies. THAT's why people want him gone. Downtown redevelopment was a NO BRAINER!!! A trained poodle could have done it. Every business/corporation in that area would have been foolish NOT to support that effort. DUH!Herenton has proven himself to be selfish and power hungry, and willing to say or do whatever it takes to accomplish that goal. The comment right before you made it clear - he was fired from his previous job for poor performance, and the voters gave him more power, and more money, so he could screw up the entire city. Why stop at ruining the schools?

I heard the reason that Herenton has never been indicted on any of his illegal money things is because he is tight with District Attorney Bill Gibbons. So the reason for him getting away with illegal g-r-e-e-d-y things for so long. Now if the FBI is involved, that's another level and they can bypass Gibbons, the city prosecutor, because a lot of the stuff I had heard about before was regarding city taxpayer buildings, moneys, etc, since he IS the city mayor. But if he has messed around with the feds money, than he has really made a mistake, because. They don't play, and if they do, it's hardball.

fly on the wall.....i am a MEMPHIAN who wants jobs for my city so that it can AFFORD the things that it needs to do. how do you suppose a mayor can effectively protect its citizens from crime, increase services, educate its children and give its people a clean city to be proud of without money? WWH has lacked in many areas and still could do alot better but until someone else is elected i am not going to sit around and blame everything on him. he has done THE things memphis needed most at the time in order to reverse the course we WERE on. had he not bullied his politics through the red tape no businesses would have invested in this city. less jobs would be here. less money would be around to pay our officers/city workers. poverty is the root of all our cities problems and he is realistic about that. white or black we all should want the best for memphis, otherwise why are you still here?

East memphis would have been just fine. Under Herenton, they decided to tear down the projects, and move all the crime to other parts of the city. Downtown is great and the mayor made a fortune on redeveloping it. But the citizens(black and white) who wanted better lives for themselves and their children, are suffering because willie moved the crime to their neighborhoods.

Until people stop voting for the Lesser of Two Evils - stop voting by party affiliation, stop voting by skin color, gender, or religion - we shall continue to be governed by corrupt politicians. People don't vote based upon what is GOOD for the community - they vote on skin color - who promises the most (there is NO FREE LUNCH) - and who can con them the best.

There is no monopoly on this by any skin color - they are all the same. It is the HEART of the person we should be looking at and see what the color of the HEART is.

That is the crux of all this and as long as it exists we shall see many more John Fords, Al Gores, Bill Clintons, George Bushes, Reid - Pelosi - Herentons, and all the others who can lie their way into office.

The people vote in their worst traits and then sit back complaining about it.

The real enemy is in the mirror.

bobby...white flight began in this city after mlk was hot. that is when the white middle class that made up the majority of the tax base began to leave. the duplicate budgets are adding to the taxes of shelby county residents. when the white exodus began they took alot of businesses with them. it was not that the blacks could not hold their own, it was that the jobs flew to the outer communities beginning in the 60-70's that is when downtown and whitehaven etc went down hill. again it is not about race its about the economics of a tax base. i say good riddance too, and welcome the more progressive younger generation that is repopulating the city all around.

The federal government gave us the money to redeveloped downtown. And Belz did a lot 2. WWH has done nothing but increased white flight and race relations. He also made white real estate agents rich. MCS is a joke, the sad thing is SCS is more of a joke. We need to expect more from our politicians. Consolidation is the only way, however i am afraid that will just move more people out. However, with 4 dollar gas how far can people run. Downtown is slowly becoming what it was, more bars are closing. People aren't moving in. Cars in harbor town are being broken into. We live in a city that will be destroyed by greed.

AH! What did the Fords bring to Memphis? For one thing these brothers brought with them many indictments. Yes, Emmitt, Harold, Sr., Edmund, Sr. and John, Sr. On top of they we cannot ignore the antics of Joke and Isaac Ford as well as Harold, Jr. having ignored the needs of the 9th district other than passing around a few turkeys.

Now Harold, Jr. could be thinking about running for governor. Hell, this could lead to his giving full pardons to all members of his nefarious family.

You can see what happened to Memphis after the Fords showed their crooked ways, their non-blood brothers and sisters such as Dixon, Williams, Bowers, Hooks, Sr., Hooks, Jr, and some of the antics rubbed off on Thompson and Cooper.

It makes me wonder what will follow if Barack Obama makes it to the White House. God, help this country keep Obama out of the White House.

Listen up! Mayor Herenton has done a lot for this city. Of course, he is a peice of work, but he has not done anything that any other politician hasn't done. They are all crooked and greedy as hell! If they don't start out that way, trust me they will end up that way.

Yes, white politicians has been doing it for years, but that's no excuse because we all know that we can't do what they do. You know how the white people do it; once we catch on they change the rules of the game. For example, taxes, bankruptcy and so on....when we figure out shit they been getting by on they put other stipulations out there. I am not taking up for what the black politicians done because it was pityful when they did that TN Waltz shit! Katherine Bowers? She is damn near too old to walk and she had the nerves to be crooked!

I think that the white people liked Hereton at first, and then they figured out that he was not one of those "TOMS" and he started releasing that "THUG" on them and it scared the shit out of them. He started telling them how he was shaking the "HATERS" off and they realized that he knew their intentions.

DO YOU THINK THE CITY WOULD BE BETTER IF WE GOT A WHITE MAN LIKE DUMB ASS, UNEDUCATED DICK HACKETT BACK IN OFFICE AS MAYOR?

Anonymous said...

It will probably go unnoticed by most, but 11:39 probably said it best. No matter who gets into office, or what race they are, they will eventually be the whipping boy for those of us who refuse to blame ourselves for our own short commings. All politions are corrupt. The longer they stay in office, the more bullitproof they feel.
The more personal hits they take, the more they feel they should be entitled to some more gravy for themselves.
We are too lazy to stay involved in the governing process, so we either ignore it, or bitch because we aren't getting our way. It is so much easier to blame someone else. Hell! the ones bitching the loudest, usually don't even vote!!
I personally think WW stayed in office two terms too long, but until the last election, I did not see anyone running against him that I was too impressed with.
To play the devils advocate, WW is not to blame for the crime in Memphis. WE ARE.
I could rant on and on, but most people on here probably don't want to read the long posts, so just think about it.

In order for this city to ever achieve glory certain steps need to be put in place. First of all the mayor should resign, secondly the races must interact, thirdly, real jobs should be created, not temporary jobs, real jobs. Mayor Herenton is only part of the problem, our problems run deeper. I myself pled no contest to a felony charge 12 years ago, since then I've received a degree from the University of Memphis. Question, Herenton was elected and African Americans in this city felt change was under way, but why are we the majority on the streets but the minority in the work office? But we continue to elect these black leaders who refuse to look at the overall problems. Ask any of these young black men this question, would you rather sell dope 20 hours a week and make $1000or work for a temp service for 40 hours a week and bring home $250.
