News Channel 3 last night reported that there are at least 3 violations being investigated by The State Board Of Funeral Directors, against N.J. Ford and Sons Funeral Home including the pictures that I took of Lester Street victim Shindri Robinson.
As I stated at that time and still state the employees of the funeral home were fully aware that i was present and assisted me in taking the pictures. I was given the okay by Operations manager Edgar Miller who I spoke with over the phone telling me that the body had arrived from the City Morgue. I asked if I could come over and see the body and he gave the okay.
Prior to entering the morgue I visited in the lobby with Miller, Joe Ford, and John Ford. I was given the okay to enter the morgue ,and with camera in hand I entered the door which has never had an "Employees Only" sign. The morgue attendant showed me where the body was and removed the sheet, he also showed me where all the wounds were,and stood there as I took pictures. Also present was the hair dresser.
The statement by Joe Ford that I snuck into the funeral home is a lie. As a former employee of the funeral home and a person who is well known it would be impossible for me to sneak into the funeral home in broad day light. While I didn't ask permission to take pictures I would think if you give me the okay to enter the morgue with my camera in plain view that permission is being given, especially since that was not the first time I had taken pictures in their morgue where they were posted on this site.
I find it strange now that The State Board is concerned about the practices of N.J. Ford Funeral Home. In 1994 with the assistance of Charles Harrison of Orange Mound Funeral Home I submitted proof that Ford's overcharged for services, I provided proof of body snatching that had the assistance of the Homcide Division of MPD, I provided proof of a body being pulled out of a paid casket and resold because the body was going to the County Cemetery and the family was not being allowed to go. I also provided proof of how families who at the time were under the TENNCARE program Excess Med Plus were being targeted for rip off, but the state did nothing.

Come on now get real.........if Thaddeus wasn't welcome or wasn't suppose to go to the area where the bodies were then do you think he'd risk being arrested for entering unauthorized areas or being told "you can't go in there". Why is it that when the pictures were posted N.J. Ford didn't immediately (I'm talking like the same day or at least the day after) come out with a statement that Thaddeus snuck and took the pictures. I believe N. J. Ford tried to come out with a statement like that but dam it was days maybe weeks later that they tried to say Thaddeus snuck in & took the pictures.

I don't think the issue was permission or not, it was respect for the dead. Thad, I applaud you for doing your homework, but the pictures were a little overboard especially for family members of the deceased.
Sometimes one has to make a judgement call about what to say, show or reveal, and those pictures were really not for everyone to see. I wish that you had kept them to yourself and put up a private link for those who wanted to see them.

This issue about the prep room at N. J. Ford Funeral Home has been blown all out of proportion. I mean, who ain't been in the prep room at N. J. Ford Funeral Home? Going in the prep room of N. J. Ford's Funeral Home is a Memphis Tradition. Over the past thirty (30) years. I have heard a ton of home boyz and home girls say they have been in the prep room of N. J. Ford Funeral Home. I even heard one guy say he paid one of the Ford's kids to go in the prep room to look at a friend of his remains. He went back there and saw his friends remains laid out on the "cooling board" (nickname for embalming table, used mostly in the South by old time morticians of days gone by). A lot of times in church, you will hear old people praying saying "oh thank you lord, my bed is not the 'cooling board' and my room is not the long walls of the grave. If every common homeboy or homegirl that has been in N. J. Ford's prep room were to stand in line; the line would stretch from the White House to the Capitol. Brother Thaddeus Matthews was trying to show the people what The Memphis Police Department was trying to hide. When you live in the United States and you are black. You are subject to the American Judicial System, and that is. The Judge may wear a black robe. But, it will always be white justice. I'll say it again. BLACK ROBE, WHITE JUSTICE, and if you don't believe me, ask a brother who has worked in or been a inmate in a State or Federal Prison.

You're wondering about why there was magic marker writing on the leg instead of a toe tag.
It is simple math. A good quality waterproof toe tag might cost about 75 cents. A permanent marker costs two dollars and will last about 50 corpses or more. So writing the name will be cheaper.
Besides this, the body is dead and is covered so nobody knows about all the writing anyway. You would be surprised at what gets written on bodies this way. Not just the names but sometimes they write jokes and stuff on the bodies for fun.
I cannot speak for this funeral home but I can speak of others from experience. I know one place where a guy in the back would write ALL KINDS of nasty stuff on every body. Even draw circles and stars and arrows and stuff where the sun dont shine. One time he wrote "ugly dead bitch" right on the chest with a arrow to the face. Her family never knew it with the shirt pinned on top. They were just crying but they would have been yelling if they had seen it.
Thats nothing though. You would be AMAZED at some of the other jokes and stuff they do on bodies. I mean amazed. Trust me if your loved one is laying in a box, you dont want to know or see some of the crazy stuff going on under the clothes. It would make you mad.
Everyone who is bitchin about those photos were the first to pull them up and look at them for themselves. Thad, you did nothing wrong...

Two wrongs don't make a right. I use to work at a funeral home, I too walk in and out as I please even now. I would never do what you did, I guess who never thought about the victims family. Whoever are whatever you after do it without hurting innocent people. You are just as much to blame as they are. No you did not violate legal grounds, what about moral grounds
