The news of Florida based Harold Ford Sr. deciding to hold fundraisers for Congressman Steve Cohen has just lit a fire in the Memphis mayor that will now make him run against Cohen even if there was never any real intent to do so. What Cohen does not realize is that he is not being supported by the former congressman because Ford feels he's the better man but Ford sees a chance to try and jab the former boxer turn poli-trick-an.
Ford who is a political lobbyist and a person who has never did anything for anyone without there being something in it for him must have cut some type of deal with Cohen to be making this move. Cohen has to be desperate to cut a deal with a political lobbyist whose only agenda is money.
Harold Ford Sr. involvement does not increase Cohen's chances of defeating Herenton if the mayor gets in the race,In fact it could work against him. Many will wonder if Cohen is paying one black man to fight another. The thought will be why is Ford who left Memphis now so concerned about Memphis politics especially when there is no family member in the race if Cohen has not cut a deal with him. The thought can't be that he's concerned about the plight of the 9th Congressional district because he has not showed any interest in it for years other then to try and get his son elected to the U.S. Senate. Ford can not state that he is concerned about the economic status of Blacks in the district who make up the majority of residents in the district when he sold his Black family owned business to a White funeral company.
The Ford machine that once reigned terror in Memphis politics is dead and has no power or ability to garner enough votes to make a difference. Ford Sr. could not get Junior Ford elect to the senate,and could not get his brother Joe elected mayor against Willie Herenton. Many in the Black community could care less about Harold Ford Sr. and the young Black voter does not even know him.
The Blacks that Cohen has surrounded himself with are nice names on a fundraising list but have no ability to garner votes. Maxine Smith,Vasco Smith, Calvin Anderson, and O.C. Pleasant can't deliver no votes to Cohen but their own. Cohen would be better off running on his record then enlisting the aid of the "Old Negro Brigade".
If Cohen was smart he would have raised campaign funds quietly without causing a stir and waited for Herenton to officially get in the race then to enlist Ford and the 'Old Negro Brigade"and force the fighter to get in a fight that he will fight to win no matter who has to get bloodied and knocked out.

I am not a friend of Maxine or Vasco Smith, nor do I know them personally, but you really need to stop bad-mouthing them. If it had not been for vocal people like Maxine Smith, Vasco Smith, Dr. Ben Hooks, A.W. Willis, students demonstrating peacefully, and many, many others here on the local level, we would not even have Black school board members etc. You are too young to have lived what many of us have lived in Memphis society. Dr. King was the "Drum Major" for us all. I forgot to mention Rev. Billy Kyles, Dr. Lofton. I am missing so many names, but you know who you are.
