Sources close to the Herenton inner circle called me Wednesday afternoon and stated that the mayor will retire within the next two weeks. In fact the source states that the date of Willie Wilbert Herenton's last day as mayor of the City of Memphis will be Friday July 10th. Sources within city hall also state that directors have been told that if they need anything signed it needs to be on the mayor's desk by July 1.
All though many knew that the mayor would retire early most thought that Herenton would give city council chair Myron Lowery the satisfaction of becoming mayor as the charter provides when the mayor retires,resigns, or is recalled. But I'm told that the mayor has gotten over that issue and has his total focus on running for congress.
Herenton was energized when Harold Ford Sr decided to endorse and raise money for Steve Cohen. I have been told by sources very close to the mayor that Herenton and Ford had had a conversation concerning the congressional race where Ford is stated to have told Herenton that it was a great idea to run against Cohen. Ford told Herenton during the telephone conversation I'm told that he would be in Memphis in several days and that the two would meet but Ford didn't meet and the Herenton camp got word that Ford would be supporting Cohen.
I was told by Randy Wade the Administrative Assistant to Cohen that it was his idea for the congressman to contact Ford which he did and the rest is history unfolding. The battle for congress between these two will be the greatest and the bloodiest political battle in the history of this city and bodies will be left on the battlefield.
I was told by the mayor several days ago that he is planning a press conference where he has plans to announce something major. When I asked him what it was he just laughed and said wait and see. Well maybe he's about to announce what I have been told that he's stepping out of one ring of battle and preparing to deliver a blow to Cohen that will be felt around the country. And then we get Myron Lowery and a special election that will become a 3 ring circus with the best clowns that can be found.

Herenton (and his supporters) need to understand that this is the age of Obama. Meaning - he needs to base his campaign on issues beyond race. I'm not sure that Herenton knows how to do this based on his comments to date. He obviously doesn't know how to run a campaign aside from appealing to Memphis' black majority.
However, I hope the Mayor doesn't take anyone for granted. He showed little concern during that major storm a couple of weeks ago. Folks are going to remember that.

Obama was elected not because he was black, but, because he was young, qualified, and a progessive. Herenton is not progessive, look at Memphis. What has Herenton done for black folks in memphis besides record unemployment, which he stands down on, and high crime which he also stands down on.
When you talk about what Herenton has done for Memphis you talk about things he did 6 and 7 years ago. What he did down town is all owned by white folks not black. 99 percent of the developers in the City of Memphis are white, so it makes no since to me to support the mayor in anything else in the city.

I think the mayor has and ego problem, I didn't like him winning the last race and I don't think he should win this one. The reasons are that the city is more divided now than when he started. With him being an educator and the superintendant of schools he should have focus his mayoral duties to cleaning up the schools and the police department. Both of those are worst off than when he took over. Also he has focus on leaving a good paying job (I am glad of that) not completing the task, he was voted in for a number of years and is getting ready to quit not completing the task he was voted in for. It sounds like he does have a punk bone in his body. Now the only reason he is running is because ford is against him. He should be running because he wants to help Memphis be a better place to live and want to continue to be a service to the people the only service he has given to the people has been for him to help himself.

It just tickles my ass to see the dimwits of the ninth district beholden to Willie and AC as the two roll around the better parts of this town and the resorts while their supporters rot in poverty while selling their vote just to hear a few racist remarks and gnaw on some hot dogs and don cheap tee shirts at election time. In the last 15 years, What happen to Whitehaven, the entire Winchester road, Brooks road, Hickory hill, South Memphis, Frayser, Hamilton High area, , Elvis Presley, Southland Mall, Hickoy Hill Mall, Raleigh Mall, Wooddale area, Mall of Memphis Area? These are places were "black family" called their own. What do blacks have but Jail. Look at the schools, community centers and Libraries in these areas. Ask yourself has Willie done for the "memphis blacks" NOT what he has down for the "WIllie friends"? Oh I forgot he gave us Beale Street. Oh that don't put money in tax payers pockets, it puts money in Willie's friend pockets.

In watching video of Herenton's announcement, was Gale Jones Carson in attendance? She appears to be one of the persons getting into the elevator with Herenton. Does she still work at city hall?
Her presence is curious b/c if you are a relatively attractive light-skinned woman in the vincinity of the Mayor, she'll give you a suspicious and insecure glare. Usually women don't behave like that unless someone's around that they are personally involved with.
Since WW"s admin is starting to retire with big pensions and since Myron Lowery is about to sit in the Mayors seat for a short time, his pay changes to the Mayor's salary right(pro-rated)? So if Myron wanted to retire before he is replace, would he retire with a CC or Mayor's pension?
Damn if I can understand why anyone would in the future vote for Willie Herenton other than those he has overpaid in the last couple of years for no other result other than to screw all, including you haters, the tax payers who have to pay these worthless individuals pensions to they die and go to hell. The City Pension program may be in trouble. At the end of the last fiscal year ending July 30, 2009 the market value of the City Pension fund dropped from $2.11 billion to $1.45 billion, almost by 1/3.
Now Herenton, his boy GODwin and others are going to add to this problem.
Wait and see - the city is going to get out of the pension business for future employees and go to a 401k or othe type of program.
Herenton has appointed positions over and above what the City Charter allows costing $16 million dollars a year in 2005 and over $60million in future pensions due to the stupid January 2001 pension resolutions allowing elected and appointed officials to retire after 12 years of service regardless of age. Most all of his appointments are payoffs for votes and "yes" people. Just like GODwin and his appointed positions.
They all need to go or the tax payer will continued to get stuck with higher taxes and crime. It will take years to fix what Herenton and GODwin have done to this city.

Memphis victim of crime reports. Have you noticed that everytime Larry Godwin gets into a situation you hear from the U OF M criminology, Richard Janikowski. They want you to believe that the crime reporting data is flawed. Godwin failed to mention that crime increased 19.8% his first year simply because he eliminated the Crime Prevention Unit, and the Metro Gang Unit. Why would someone do that knowing that crime would get out of control? The answer is simple; Godwin wanted to introduce BLUE CRUSH so he could patent it. He has been trying to reduce crime every since 2004 and that's the real reason Memphis is known as one of the most violent cities.
They want you to believe that Memphis crime is not as bad as it seems. For instance, New York does not report thefts under $1000.00. That maybe true but that type crime does not factor into the category of the violent city rankings. Those crimes are murder, aggravated assault, rape and robbery. Godwin is the master of deception. If he could get crime back to where it was when he was appointed, he would be doing a hell of a job.
