In a city where Blacks make up at least 75-80% of the population four Whites have expressed a desire to become mayor of Memphis. Carol Chumney who has let it be known that there is no way she is getting out of the race is the only candidate among the four that has a relationship with the Black community.
Jim Strickland,Jack Sammons,and Kemp Conrad have never had a relationship with the Black community and have very little chance within the next couple of months of creating one. Sammons a former city councilman and Strickland and Conrad have never needed the Black community to win do to the fact that have only represented areas of the city where there is a collected group of affluent Whites.
The only way that Strickland,Sammons,and Conrad can win is that Black politicians create the same circus they created when numerous Blacks entered the Ninth Congressional race several years ago in the highly Black populated district allowing Steve Cohen to win the seat.
Carol Chumney who has represented Blacks on the council and is known to be visible in the Black community is the only choice for Whites who may want to see a White candidate win the position. Chumney already has Black support where the other three have none. While the all have the right to run it's to late for Strickland,Conrad,and Sammons to think that they can now court the Black community for their own agendas. If they decide to run which again is their choice there are those who are prepared to remind the Black community that these White men have never cared for the Black community in the past so don't come knocking now.

The "black community" argument is getting old, Thad. As a black person that lives in and always will live in the black community of Memphis I am trying to figure out exactly what would a politician do to improve a person's life. If a mayor was able to bring in 100 manufacturing plants paying top dollar to the city, still if you were sorry and made umpteenth mistakes in your life you would not get hired anyway. Like my Mississippi raised grandmother used to say all the time about blacks migrating from Mississippi to Memphis, Chicago, etc, if you were sorry in Mississippi you were most likely going to be sorry in Memphis or Chicago.
The same goes for black "individuals" in Memphis. If they were sorry 18 years ago when Herenton was first elected, odds are they are still sorry now. And will remain sorry whether the new mayor is Wharton, Lowery, Chumney, Strickland, or whoever. The black community is made up individuals. If those individuals are strong-minded, honest, hardworking, caring for each other then the black community will be strong. But if those individual are weak-minded, lack integrity, lazy, and do not care about themselves or others then the black community will be in disarray as it is now in some parts. There are not any politicians that can legislate integrity, industriousness and caring.
Thad, you have for years have made an effort to organize the "black community" with very little effect. But I am sure that you have touched a few individuals that through your efforts have turned around their lives and would have done so regardless of what color their mayor, congressman, or president were.
I am very proud of my black working class neighborhood that is made up of wonderful individuals who keep an eye out for each other, keep the streets clean so therefore together we are great community. I can't remember the last time I have seen a politician come around here if ever. We were great when Hackett was mayor, great when Herenton was mayor and will be great with whomever is the next mayor. It is time for the "black community" to quit looking at politicians as some savior. It is clear by now that that is not how the political game works after the votes are counted.

I'm a white person who grew up here and moved away because (among many other reasons)I didn't think the older white folks would ever give blacks a chance to achieve no matter how qualified, and I didn't want to live in such an environment.
I have been voting for black, Latino, Asian, and white candidates for 30 plus years, and voted for Barack Obama.
I have not decided who will have my vote for Memphis mayor, but whoever it is must be committed to serving all Memphians. This black/white divide and conquer, line their own pockets by playing the race card on both sides of the table, must stop.
Whoever it is must also want to do the hard work of governing an increasingly diverse city with real urban problems and a backward smalltown mentality, where other races besides black and white now live, work, and vote.

All these people's voices matter whether they are the majority or not. We need someone who like Obama can come in and clean up a disastrous mess created by the previous administration. A development at the fairgrounds would be a real mistake. It is just two close to Orange Mound.

I think that if a person is "racist" this day in time they are more than likely uneducated, because if you notice GHETTO TRASH and TRAILER PARK TRASH are normally the ones who are racist and more times than not they are the uneducated people.
Black people we are the first to accuse someone of being racist when actually we carry the most hate. Stop blaming whites for your failures. I could understand if we were back in the 60's or even the 70's but this is 2009 and you are still blaming. It is YOU who refuse to get an education, it is YOU who refuse to raise your children according to the WORD, it is YOU who allow your children to drop out of school, it is YOU who rather get high than buy food, it is YOU who rather get welfare than work, it is YOU that allow your sons and daughters to sell drugs just so you can get high or pay bills because you are SORRY! Stop blaming others and get up off the couch and get yourselves in a position to win.
You see whites and blacks that are hardworking and decent want the same thing, and that is a nice living environment and to make sure that our children are educated. We do not want to live, shop or play near TRAILER TRASH OR GHETTO people. We are tired of paying high taxes in order for lazy ass people to eat better than we do. We are tired of people coming into our neighborhoods to steal our belongings.
You see it does not matter if you are black, white, and yellow or green, SORRY comes in all colors. Stop voting because of color, because no matter who holds the seat, we are responsible for ourselves. Black folk, some of us are so disappointing because you sit around and expect someone else to take care of you (welfare), and you expect someone else to raise your drug baby (school board) when it should be you.
I am not a racist, but I can honestly say that my white friends treat me a thousand times better than my black ones did. My children have black and white friends and they do not see color, they see character.
Vote for whomever you want, but remember you have to make happen for yourself. I do not live in the city, therefore I cannot vote in this race but those who do, really need to do some soul searching and do the right thing. Vote for the person because of what they are bringing to the table and who will help Memphis become the beautiful city that it should be.

Great and valid points made
So far, Iv'e not heard any of the candidates' views on the major issues facing Memphis. The city has a nationwide reputation for crime and racial division; it is not attracting the businesses that bring good paying jobs to the area; and we seem to be lowering the bar for our children both academically and behaviourally in our schools.
Whether the best candidate for mayor is White or Black, some tough issues need to be addressed by all of the candidates and his or her fitness for office should be determined by, not only past service, but his or her approach to solving the issues facing this city. We have had enough demogoguery; the time for real solutions and practical approaches is upon us. What we do in this election will determine if Memphis will be a viable city in the next decace or fade into oblivion as a "could have been".
