Professional wrestler and successful businessman Jerry "The King" Lawler appeared on Wednesday on the "Thaddeus Matthews Show" where he states that Memphis needs him as mayor. Lawler says that Memphis needs a mayor that is not a politician and one who seeks to be a unifier.
I had thought that the idea of Lawler running for mayor was a joke or a publicity and was very surprised as he candidly answered my questions about his bid for the job that would reduced his income by thousands. Lawler at age 59 who has appeared weekly on Memphis TV for 37 years says that he is tired of the travel and would hang up his tights if elected. When I questioned him as to if his announcement for mayor was a publicity stunt he replied "I've been on Memphis TV for 37 years,I'm seen weekly on the number one program on cable (Monday Night Raw) so no I don't need the publicity".
Lawler says that his desire to be mayor comes from his love for the city and from a desire to bring racial harmony to the city. He does on to state that politician are greedy an out for themselves. He called Myron Lowery greedy and one who wants power. Lawler says that if he is elected he will not require a city owned car but will continue to drive his "Caddy. He would want the money used to provide a mayor with a car used to provide a mobile mayor's office,a mobile home that serves as a office that each week is in a different part of the city where the people could bring and express their needs to him with staff present to implement those needs.
When I stated to Lawler that Blacks make up the majority of the population of the city and what would he do for Blacks he replied " Nothing, I'm not going to do any more for Blacks then I am going to do for Whites" He went on to state that he would hold meetings all over the city so that citizens Black and White could give him their agendas for their communities.
I asked Lawler about whether or not he would retain Lowery appointee Jack Sammons as CAO of the city if he's elected and he replied that Sammons would have to go. I also asked Lawler "Looking at the crime rate and the morale of police officers would you fire Larry Goodwin as director of police?" His answer was that Goodwin would be fired and that he would look within the department for a replacement. I reminded him of A.C.Wharton answer to that same question where Wharton stated that he would do a nationwide search for a director and Lawler stated that to do that is to say that we don't have a qualified person already on the force.
Jerry Lawler also states that he would seek to discover what could be done for the mayor to have control of Memphis City Schools,doing away with a school board and making who ever is in charge of the day to day operations of the school responsible to him. He also stated that the money used for busing could be better used in other areas of government. Where he says that he may not know all that the professional poli-trick-an knows he will allow "Common sense" prevail surrounding himself with knowledgeable staff persons from all segments of the community to help him lead the city.
The wrestler who wants to be mayor says he will ask no one for campaign funds to finance his campaign and will not have a campaign manager because that's what politicians do. He says that he plans to finance his own campaign and listen to the people as to what they want done from a mayor.
Some may say that Lawler is a joke, but the joke is 8-9 different Blacks running for the office. Where I support the idea of a Black holding the office I will not support the idea of so many Blacks in the race and I must admit that the "Common Sense ideas of lawler, Make sense.
Rumor has it that Jim Strickland may not run for mayor with Lawler in the race, in other words with one strong White candidate in the race why ad a lesser known White candidate who does not have the racial crossover appeal. This is something that Black candidates should pattern. I received calls from Blacks listening to the show that stated that they would vote for Lawler which means that the toughest listening audience in Memphis heard some things from Lawler that just made good sense.
There is no doubt that Lawler could win, with numerous Blacks in the race he will have the greater name recognition of any candidate and his ideas will appeal to Blacks as well as Whites. Lawler would definitely pull some of the Black vote from all candidates including A.C. Wharton and would demand a large percentage of the White vote. Unlike any other White in the race Lawler does not have to court the Black vote because he's already known and received in the Black community and has been for 37 years.
In a race that is projected to have a small turnout their will be those who vote that is tired of "Politics as Usual" an willing to give Lawler a chance for the remaining two years of Herenton's term to see what he can do. There will also be Blacks that will vote that will be angry with the numerous Blacks that could not come together to find one consensus candidate and who do not want to give Wharton their vote that also will vote for Lawler. Yes in a few months King Willie as some in the community call Willie Herenton could be replaced with a king that has worn a crown for 37 years by the name of Jerry Lawler who plans to make Myron Lowery and others like him in city government court jesters.

Jerry Lawler you have my vote. Common sense will tell you that Larry Godwin should have been fired a long time ago. Jerry, did you know that Memphis crime rate was once lower than New York's crime rate. New York now has reduced its crime rate lower than any large city. What happen to Memphis? Larry Godwin came in and changed the way the police department used to fight crime. During his first year, crime increased 19.8%. This was done intentionally so he could introduce BLUE CRUSH. Godwin obtained a patient on BLUE CRUSH so he could sell it if the crime rate was reduced. This was a conflict of interest and the mayor oR the city council should have intervened but they knew nothing about crime or what Godwin's intentions were.
You said yesterday that some crimes the police can't deter. I disagree with you. If the person committing the crime was already in jail there is no way he could commit anymore crimes. Most violent crimes are gang or drug related. Over the weekend you know we had 13 shootings and a high rankings police official, Joe Scott stated that some of the shootings were drug related. If the police department had been taking care of business like they used to, the lester street incident probably would not have occurred. It is a known fact that the lester st house was a crack house. If the police would have been raiding these crack houses daily like they used too, lester st would have been a casualty along with hundreds of other crack houses. Just think of the weapons and violent criminals that would be off the streets. Godwin stopped that and we are now stuck with BLUE CRUSH.

Thad, you really suprised me with how you protected Jerry from every question that was asked. Most of the question you did not even give him a chance to answer to where the questioner had to debate the issue with you instead of the man wanting to be mayor. I like you and I like your show but I was very suprised by your actions yesterday. When you did allow him to answer a question, he would talk about bringing people together to fix the problems that are in the situation whether it was about the schools,crime and what ever else. To me that is not an answer,and it shows that he just does not know the issues of our schools, crime and whatever else. Anyway, Memphis upcoming mayoral elections has me intrigue and I most say that I was also disappointment in your interview with the wrestler.

You protected him and handled him with kid gloves. The only pressing question that you asked was what was he going to do for the black community. His answer was suspect to me. This is a man if elected, will do nothing for the black community until it is time for re-election so that he can have something to campaign on.
I know that the mayoral race is nonpartisan, but by asking what party he belongs to will give you some idea what his idealogy is. It shouldn't be a dealbreaker, but it will give you an idea about someone who is a political novice. For instance, if he is a republican and is fiscally conservative, WATCH OUT! If he is socially conservative, WATCH OUT! It would be hard for me to imagine a moderate conservative in the deep south. A southern, moderate conservative is a DEMOCRAT and not a republican.If he is fiscally conservative, to get the budget in order, would he be more apt to try to eliminate programs, bonds that HE may view nonessential, but is greatly needed in the black community which is the majority population. You mention downtown Memphis and the difference on some blocks as far as the redevelopment. If the blighted part is near the bad (black) part of Memphis you can forget about getting anything done.. If he is socially conservative, mothers DO NOT have you teen sons out past 6pm or you may be getting a phonecall from jail.
He is the white man that the WHITE power structure in Memphis will get behind, because he is their GREAT WHITE HOPE.

I personally like Jerry Lawler and think he is an intelligent guy and there is no question he loves the city of Memphis. However, the lack of experience should concern all Memphis voters black and white. I agree with the King that many politicians are in for themselves and waste money, no doubt. The problem is when you go into a situation like trying to fix what is wrong with Memphis, there does need to be some experience. The King does not have that. I just don't think the time is right for Lawler and that is no slam against him.
How would Lawler have specific plans allready with what to to with crime ans schools issues. Just a few weeks ago running for mayor was not on anybodys mind. He gave common sense answers to start the process of making the citys problems get better. I think that if he comes out and offers to donate his salery as mayor back to the city that would go a long way to helping him win this election, cleaning up this city and getting race out of the agenda.

Unless you live here and deal with the out of control crime on the streets and the corruption in the political back offices, you should mind your own damn business. We are trying to find a person who can fix Memphis' problems and your assumption that that person needs to be black really makes no sense. I listened to the interview of Lawler and I think he had some intelligent ideas for Memphis. I have accused Thaddeus of being racist and biased. I don't agree with his assertion that only a black candidate should lead a city where blacks are the majority. Just as thousands of white folk voted for Obama, I think black folk should vote for whom they think can best fix the problems of Memphis. If that candidate happens to be black, then so be it. Voting for skin tones has kept Memphis down in my opinion. Back to the Lawler interview, Thad was fair and made a lot of good sense. We may disagree on a lot of race issues, but I have to admit, Thad does speak his mind and I have to respect that. Right now, in my opinion, judging by the people lining up to run for Mayor, Lawler seems to be the best candidate.
Whether you are a "politrikan" or not, you should be able to tell the people of Memphis what you plan to do a Mayor if elected. I thought it was sad and very eye opening to hear Jerry Lawler say that he does not know what a political "platform" is. If he has been hearing this, don't you think he should have done some research and find out what a platform is. For a good many years during the time black crooks within government took over East St. Louis, IL the primary route from that area of Illinois to Missouri was through the streets of East St. Louis which was something most people would not risk.
As the above surface express highways were completed by the bid rigging road contractors of Illinois passage through the corrupt city of East St. Louis became safe as one traveled seventy miles per hour fifty feet off the ground while dropping exhaust gasses on the hapless souls living on the surface.
Maybe the above is the future of Memphis, i.e. city passage from Arkansas to Collierville at seventy miles per hour fifty feet of the ground. You see Memphis is on the same path of East St. Louis IL, it all started with Willie Herenton.
