On last week I received an anonymous letter from a U.S.Postal employee who works at the main branch on Third. The employee speaks of how employees are being paid to do nothing and required to sit in what is called a stand by room.
The letter states that the room is small with about 15-20 people normally sitting with a supervisor paid to watch adults. The letter states that while the supervisor is paid to babysit them they are paid to do nothing. It also states that employees are not allowed to read any material other then out dated postal material.
The anonymous employee also states that they are not allowed to eat,sleep, do puzzles,or listen to the radio unless you have ear plugs, Also to leave the room the employees are required to get a "permission sheet" like students in a classroom. The letter states that there are employees with back problems and others with on the job injuries who are made to sit in folding chairs for up to 8 hours. The employee also believes that their union has sold out. The letter also speaks of employees contacting OSHA about the small room with flies and mosquitoes and state that OSHA states there is nothing they can do since there is nothing happening that is life threatening. The employees state that they have contacted Steve Cohen's office but have been told that there is nothing he can do since this issue is happening all over the country.
The employees state that while they have not received a cost of living increase in pay ,stamps and other postal services have went up. There is also the concern that some employees have been uprooted to other parts of the country with the Post office supposing to give them $5,000 which they state the employees have had a problem getting.
The anonymous writer along with other employees that I have spoken with employees at the main branch on Third state that the reason management has the stand by room is because there is no work for the employees but the main is being delayed.
Employees at the Main branch state that the mail is being purposely delayed by management whose changing the dates on the postal pieces. The employees state that when the mail comes in if they can't get it out that day the day is changed so that when the big people come from headquarters they will think that it's that days work when in reality it's work from the day or days before.
After receiving the letter and mentioning it on my radio show I started receiving calls all stating that the work environment downtown is close to slaves being locked in the bottom of slave ships, In fact an employee at the Mitchell Road Post office stated that employees with nothing to do are forced to state in a room in the basement of the building.
After receiving the letter I did some research on the national issue of postal employees being paid for not working and found that the U.S. Postal Service is struggling with a massive deficit caused by plummeting mail volume,And that it spends a million dollars each week to pay thousands of employees to sit in rooms and do nothing.
It's a practice called "stand by time" and has existed for for years. Post officials have went on the record stating that the Post office averages about 45,00 hours of stand by every week. It's the equivalent of having 1,125 full time employees sitting idle,At a cost of more than $50 million per year.
I will be discussing this issue today at 4 on "The Thaddeus Matthews Show" where postal employees have promised to call in.

You poor thing. You are a fish on the hook of your employer. You can wiggle loose and join the ranks of the unemployed or you should just keep your mouth shut and get reeled in. In the world of make believe it would be ideal for us to stay at home, be our own bosses, make our own rules, do as we please and then receive a regular salary for doing so. If you want to be a "kept" at home husband or wife, there is a price to pay. If you are independently wealthy and came stay at home and not report to somebody's job evey day, there is a price to pay for that too.
Believe it or not, you are not the first person to be in your predicament. I have held jobs like yours. I know from experience that sitting up all day doing absolutley nothing is enough to make you want to start screaming, but hold on. Find after work activiites that invigorate and inspire you. Volunteer to serve others. That helped me out a lot.
People on this board are calling you stupid for complaining about getting paid to do nothing and being subjected to daycare conditions instead of treated as responsible adults, but I don't. The Postal Service is full of employees who have a sense of entitlement. What the first lady on the show yesterday did not want to admit was that she makes between $50K - $60K a year. She also did not tell you that some, not all, of the employees spend must of their time filing frivolous EEO and NLRB Complaints which cost time and money for the Postal Service to defend. If these employees are so concerned about having to sit in a room doing nothing, petition their Unions to agree to give up the no layoff clause. This would give the Postal Service the ability to lay off or better yet, RETIRE !!!

It is really not all what you have read. The employees are sitting in chairs that are not comfortable for 8 hours. They can not read anything other than postal news. Its very difficult to sit and not be able to do anything but sit. The door was taken down of the small room that has no windows, the ventilation is bad.Other employees walk by and look in as though they are at the zoo looking at animals. They had work that they were doing but management decided they could just sit and do nothing while other employees do the work that the ones who are sitting in the room were doing.Sure there is a sign posted no eating, no sleeping and no drinking this is because if they catch you doing either they can disciple you or fire you which is their goal.Tell me how can you just sit in a room doing nothing and not fall asleep? This letter is surprisingly typical of the Memphis work force, always looking for something to bitch about. Always has his or her nose in someone else’s business instead of taking care of their own business. It sounds like this room is for the fuckups and complainers wanting a free ride at home while still drawing a check. The doctor said you can go back to light duty work but your work ethic is so bad no line supervisor wants you so you sit in a room with the rest of the fuckups – boohoo.
