Sources state that when U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder wasin Memphis several weeks ago he told the local U.S. Attorney that there was no smoking gun in the Willie Herenton investigation.But knowing that a republican ran U.S. Attorney's office will soon end the push is on to get Herenton indicted.
While the main stream media has focused on the $91,000 that Herenton Investments received from a business transaction with Brown Ventures, It has not stated that the real estate investment firm had an option on the Greyhound property months before Brown Ventures came to town. In fact prior to selling the option Herenton asked for a legal opinion from City Council attorney Alan Wade who is also used by the City Attorney's as well and that opinion was that there was nothing improper with the deal. Herenton also asked City Attorney Elbert Jefferson to investigate if any wrong doings had been done after the media reported the transaction.
The media eluded last week that Elbert Jefferson had some secret tape to give to the U.S. Attorney when in fact the tape was no secret the media just didn't know about it. Herenton was totally aware of the tape asking Jefferson to make the recording during the investigation he sought.
As in the Gwen Smith issue where the FBI, attorney Richard Fields, And Nick Clark all played a role in attempting to set Herenton up with the female who according to affidavits went to the home of Clark to meet with a FBI agent with Fields about Herenton. While the media played the conspiracy off they never mentioned that Smith took a lie-detector test and passed proving that all that she had stated was true. Neither the local U.S. Attorney or Bill Gibbons would move forward to investigate the matter even though Herenton made a written request.
This whole issue is not about Herenton going to jail but attempting to save Steve Cohen from defeat without the voters having a say. But this whole matter could back fire on the feds and Cohen who may knot even know he's a pawn. If the black community feels that as in the case of Joseph Lee that the Feds are going after another Black man unjustly,Or that the Feds are trying to save Cohen from defeat this could galvanize even the Black support that Herenton may have lost. And Cohen's being endorsed by Wharton will mean nothing seeing that the number of Whites in the 9th Congressional District is very small.

Steve Cohen is a good man and has done an excellent job as Congressman, but we should realize that in this case there is room for only one in the driver's seat--and that driver is Dr. Willie W. Herenton! That is the way of politics in this city. No one could prevent Wharton from becoming city mayor and no one can prevent Herenton from becoming Ninth District Congressman.

It must be the end of the world in Memphis! Mayor A. C. Wharton, according to this morning's Commercial Appeal, has scheduled a news conference to discuss the terrible tragedy dealing with the abuse and death of dogs at the Memphis Animal Shelter.
This comes after outrage from the white community as whites from all over the community flocked last night to the animal shelter for an all-night vigil to protest the treatment of the animals there. Wharton was so upset that he has stopped euthanasia at the facility and has almost shifted into panic mode.
And this, of course, is front page news for The Commercial Appeal as well as material for their lead editorial, "Questions Still Linger At Shelter." But in the same edition, the murder of a 15-year-old black boy, , Alex Bolar, merited only four sentences in the Local News section.
So we now see the priorities of Wharton and The Commercial Appeal: it's dogs before black people. Now where are the priorities of the local NAACP and the SCLC? Will they crusade against maltreatment of dogs--or crime in the Frayser area of town? And what will be the priorities of Willie Herenton and Steve Cohen? Will they remain silent and be content to let Thaddeus Matthews handle this travesty? It must be the end of the world in Memphis, Tennessee.
